Second Annual Heroes Celebration 2009

Everyday in Weld County, individuals make amazing contributions to the lives of children. The Juvenile Assessment Center recognizes the importance of these contributions and was proud to honor three individuals at our annual dinner and awards ceremony on October 15, 2009, at the University of Northern Colorado Ballroom. It was a wonderful evening of fine food, friendly conversation and inspiring stories that touched many hearts as we honored the heroes in our community who have made a positive difference in the lives of Weld County Youth.

This year's event raised $29,986 for the Juvenile Assessment Center and was attended by over 280 individuals from the Weld County area. This great turnout creates a powerful statement that the Juvenile Assessment Center is reaching out to the community and will in turn be able to reach out to more Weld County Youth.

The following three individuals were honored as local heroes at this year's celebration.

Weld County Graffiti Mural Project 2009
The Weld County Graffiti Mural Project was a community wide collaborative effort to bring juvenile drug awareness to the forefront by using the theme: "Drugs Destroy Families."

Three teams of area youth created positive, anti-substance abuse murals in different locations around town using their own experiences, unique talents, and a lot of spray paint! The participants ranged from 6yrs old to almost 20 and all worked together to create their masterpieces in very different environments.  Each mural takes on a different view of the theme and brought a lot of discussion as to what substance abuse does to the family and what it had possibly already done to their families.

The murals were finished in early November and a Celebration potluck dinner was held on November 18th.  We had over 50 individuals attend the potluck including the youth participants and their families, team leaders, and community members.  Everyone enjoyed the debut of the Graffiti Mural Project Video (below) and everyone was eager to cheer on the youth participants as they received their t-shirts, DVDs, and gift certificates.
